About Open Harvest Home

A reference archive on community gardening and urban agriculture in Canada, maintained by Green Roots Community Society in Toronto.

What This Site Covers

Open Harvest Home publishes detailed reference content on three areas: starting community gardens under Canadian municipal frameworks, selecting crops suited to short northern growing seasons, and coordinating shared plot use over multiple years. The focus is Canada — specifically the conditions, regulations, and resources that differ from gardening guidance written for temperate US or UK contexts.

The content is written for people already engaged in or planning community garden projects — not beginners looking for introductory overviews of what vegetables are. Articles assume a working knowledge of basic horticulture and focus on the coordination and planning aspects that generic gardening resources rarely cover in detail.

The Organisation Behind It

Green Roots Community Society is a non-profit registered in Ontario. The Society has been involved in community garden development in the Greater Toronto Area since 2014, working alongside parks departments and neighbourhood associations on garden establishment, governance documents, and season-by-season coordination. The editorial content on this site draws on that operational experience and on published resources from municipal garden programs across Canada.

Content Updates

Articles are reviewed and updated as municipal policies, seed availability, and regional growing data change. Each article displays a last-updated date. The site does not maintain a news feed or publish time-sensitive announcements.
